| The
range and nature of sponsorship in Whitby
shows the strength of its citizenship. Formal
schemes managed by Ali Double – Britain
in Bloom Co-ordinator provide opportunities
to increase the impact of seasonal colour
in 2007. |

Hanging
Baskets and Planters |
| |
Approximately
50 hanging baskets have been ordered
by local businesses this year so far.
Annual fees enable Tony Dominiak and
his team to travel the town at 6.0a.m.,
watering these whilst the town sleeps!
Many larger businesses sponsor stone
and metal planters each year which
provide more permanent displays. Quay
side fisheries and the Whitby hoteliers
are key contributors to this scheme.
Major features such as roundabouts
are incrementally devised to reflect
the themes of Whitby history. Research
on the historical landmarks, which
was undertaken to determine the marks
for the timeline adjacent to the floral
clock, have provided a rich source
of subjects. A planted train marks
Hudson’s railway connection, the tower
of Baskets under The Scoresby nest
points to this important maritime
invention. Our much loved Whale, the
central feature of Crescent gardens,
reminds visitors of the old Whaling
industry. Amongst our benefactors
is Astins Estate Agents who, this
year, have joined in sponsorship and
Whitby in Bloom to create an Ecclesiastical
theme at Four Lane Ends roundabout,
reminding us of our St Hildas Synod
in the town which devised our present
day callendar. |

Successful
bids have been made for larger resources
to funding bodies such as the Northern Area
Committee |

A
Tree planting scheme to remember a
loved one, by the planting a tree
in one of four areas of the town,
provides a lasting memorial as well
as addressing the carbon footprint. |
| |
Countless
individuals have each made their own
special contribution and this has
been very noticeable this year as
our efforts begin to show dividends.
These donations include cheques from
organisations such as NATS as well
as £10 & £20 notes handed to the
committee members when we |

worked
on projects in the town. Collecting tins
at our events have included the pocket money
of children as well as donations from pensioners. |

 |
As
important to us as money has been
we are indebted to many people who
have given in kind; plants bulbs and
shrubs have been added to ours stocks
by companies such as Richardson Smiths
the Auctioneers and Wisbech nurseries
and many individuals responding to
our theme of Blooming Wild. Over the
years to come many highways and byways
will blossom with wild flowers and
herbs set into verges by volunteers. |
|
|
| |
The
massive commitment of voluntary work has resulted
in the transformation of areas such as Pannett
Park, Ruswarp Village and Brunswick Church as
well as numerous repair and maintenance tasks. |
 |
| |
The
Ruswarp Group, led by Mary Degazon, has painted
village loos, weeded, planted and watered tirelessly
as well as acquiring donations such as compost,
a boat and many wild plants shrubs and seeds. |
