Whitby in Bloom 2008
Recycling and Conservation

Litter

Despite being a busy seaside resort Yorkshire in Bloom Judges last year praised the town for its clean litter free environment. This is the result not just of our public services attention but also the many voluntary groups caring for local areas. ‘Deep Clean’ events are also held periodically at different sites across the town. This gives residents an additional opportunity to have large items of rubbish transported away for them, unsavoury litter removed, kerb sides cleaned and other structures power washed and graffiti removed.

Events planned include;

1. 30th November 2006 The Ropery and Green Lane

2. 13th March 2007 Fishburn Park

3. 17th April Helredale

Our Bloom Group members and other helpers have protective clothing to make the job safer; tabards, gloves, pick up sticks, and disposable gloves. These bear our group logo to enable others to identify us and perhaps join in the work. Both Pannett Park and Ruswarp have active friends groups. Report sheets, identifying areas of concern, are logged at the Whitby in Bloom Steering Group where senior representative of our government departments relay action plans back to their respective teams and the solutions confirmed at subsequent meetings.

Beaches

ENCAMS, the ’Keep Britain Tidy’ charity made awards to eight of the Boroughs beaches last year recognising that they are well managed, clean, relatively safe and have bathing water quality which meets legal standards. Whitby, gateway to the North Yorks Moors, achieved success in the rural category and met all 13 criteria including beautiful scenery and a peaceful location.

Stretches of our beaches have been adopted, monitored and maintained to a high standard of cleanliness by groups of volunteers like The Whitby Civic Society.

Recycling

A state of art Recycling centre on the towns industrial estate sorts all categories of domestic waste in neat well labelled and ordered containers with on hand support from friendly helpful and efficient staff.

Further examples of recycling can be seen in public car spaces accessible to the public like the ones at The Whitby Co-op where bottle banks etc are sited. Innovation can be seen in allotments and private gardens. Pictures show outdoor lanterns made from empty water bottles in a Ruswarp garden and cast off items put to good use on the Mayfield allotments.

Conservation

Residents benefit from a wide variety of schemes. Discounted water butts, and compost bins make it easier to save valuable resources. Garden waste is collected from special biodegradable household sacks and recycled by the council and later in the year special green waste bins will be available. Cheap biodegradable doggy poo bags can be purchased which contribute to keeping streets and grassed areas clean and safe for children and farm animals in particular.

A sensible balance of water thirsty planting such as hanging baskets and tubs versus sustainable shrubberies and designated tree planting is sought when considering the town landscape. Four areas are designated by our Tree Officer Phil Yardley where a large indigenous species of tree can be sponsored for life. This offers a lasting connection with a loved one as well as contributing to the future well being of generations to come.

Sites designated are;

* Former Railway line (Love lane to West Cliff Ave.)
* Spital Vale
* Stakesby Vale
* West Cliff (indoor pool area)

The Whitby in Bloom Group has sponsored an oak tree to be planted on National Love a Tree Day to mark their entry into the 2007 Britain in Bloom competition as a permanent reminder of our long term commitment.
